Kurt Warner to possibly announce retirement on Friday

January 28th, 2010

warnerThere have been a lot of great NFL quarterbacks in the history of the league that have just stayed in the pros for far too long and as a result all their fans were able to witness their once favorite quarterback slowing, but surely become nothing more than an old man behind center. Occasionally in the NFL we have seen somewhat of fairy tale ending for great NFL quarterbacks like the Denver Broncos John Elway who ended his hall of fame NFL career with two straight Super Bowl titles. Elway couldn’t have ended his career with the Broncos any better and as a result many people believe he is up there in the “Best QB of All-Time” category. Then there other quarterbacks greats like Joe Montana, who is without a doubt one of the All-Time great QBs, but after his unbelievable career with the San Francisco 49ers, where he won four Super Bowl title and two NFL MVPs, Montana ended his hall of fame career with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Joe Montana played pretty well for the Chiefs with another aging hall of famer in running back Marcus Allen, but fell short in the AFC Championship game against the Buffalo Bills. The next season was somewhat of a disappointment as the Chiefs made the playoffs, but lost in the AFC Wildcard game to the Miami Dolphins.

Needless to say, Montana was unable to go out on top and retired from the game in a different uniform.

This season we have two future hall of fame quarterbacks on the verge of retirement in the Minnesota Vikings Brett Favre and the Arizona Cardinals Kurt Warner. Both of these legendary quarterbacks had exceptional seasons and were able to lead their teams into the playoffs once again, but weren’t able to reach the Super Bowl and now are contemplating retiring from the game.

There is always a lot of drama and waffling with Brett Favre which I am sure will go on all throughout the offseason, but Kurt Warner has already set a deadline for himself which is this Friday.

This Friday Kurt Warner will hold a press conference and announce his intentions for the upcoming season and whether or not he will finally call it quits.

Personally, I believe Warner can still play and if he came back for one last season the Arizona Cardinals will have good chance of a competing for a Super Bowl, but I can’t remember a time when a player called a press conference to announce he was coming back.

Brett Favre out, Donovan McNabb in?

January 27th, 2010

brettFavreSunday’s NFC Championship game between the New Orleans Saints and the Minnesota Vikings was sloppy to say the least with fumble after fumble after fumble, but despite all the turnovers and sloppy play, these two teams battled all the way into overtime where the Saints came out on a top and will advance to the Super Bowl against the Indianapolis Colts in Miami next month. Now the Brett Favre saga will begin once again with the questions on whether he will hang them up or strap them on for one more season. Personally, I believe Favre should come back for one more season with the Minnesota Vikings because he still has it and the Vikings could get to the Super Bowl with one more go around, but reports seem to have Favre once again leaning towards retirement, especially after getting pretty roughed against the Saints where he was noticeably hurt and limped off the field at one point.

Well, as of right now we can consider Brett Favre retired. So with that being said who will come in and fill some his enormous shoes and be able to repeat his performance next season.

So far there has only been one name at come up and that is the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb.

This season was a somewhat successful one for Donovan McNabb and the Philadelphia Eagles as they played very well in the regular season, but fell short in their last two games against the Dallas Cowboys. Since those losses to the Cowboys there has been a lot of speculation what will happen at the quarterback position as the Eagles have three quarterbacks that could easily be starters somewhere else in the NFL next season.

Michael Vick will pretty much control his own fate as he has the option to stay in Philly or try and become a starter like he was for the Atlanta Falcons. A few teams have already been mentioned in the hunt for Vick like the Oakland Raiders, Buffalo Bills and the Carolina Panthers. Even though Vick seems to have suitors, he did say he would love to come back to the Eagles next season even if it is as the backup once again.

Then there is youngster Kevin Kolb who played well in his limited time this season and showed he could very well be a starter in this league. With these three quarterbacks the Eagles would be wise to trade one of them and the Philly faithful seem to be leaning towards getting rid of McNabb and the Minnesota Vikings would be a good fit for the veteran quarterback.

Is Devin Harris Going to the Los Angeles Lakers?

January 22nd, 2010

No matter what happens in the NBA season, no matter how good an NBA team may appear, teams are always shopping and looking to upgrade their squads in any which way they can.

This season the Los Angeles Lakers are coming off their first NBA title in seven years as Kobe Bryant and company were finally able to get back on top with an impressive run in the Western Conference playoffs and the domination of Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic in the NBA Finals.

Coming into this season the Lakers wanted to keep their championship team relatively still intact, but they had to sign both Lamar Odom and Trevor Ariza to do just that. Even though Odom hinted to his intentions to play for the Miami Heat for a second time, Lamar was able to strike up a deal with the defending champs and remain with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Defensive specialist Trevor Ariza on the other hand, who really turned into a prime time player last season with the Los Angeles, didn’t resign with the Lakers as he was one of the most desirable free agents in the offseason. With Ariza signing a free agent contract with the Houston Rockets in the offseason, the Lakers took a huge blow to their defense, but were fortunate enough to sign Ron Artest instead and haven’t looked back since.

With Artest leading the defense, Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol controlling the offense and Andrew Bynum patrolling the paint, the Los Angeles Lakers have the best record in the NBA at 32-9 and are arguably the best team in the league once again.

Despite being arguably the best team in the NBA right now, the Lakers seem to be seeking a trade to get rid of some of their baggage and save some money for the upcoming free agent market in the summer.

The first trade rumor that has been floating around involving the Los Angeles Lakers was the Toronto Raptors sending superstar Chris Bosh to Los Angeles in exchange for youngster Andrew Bynum. This deal still may go down, but no indication this is a done deal has emerged as of yet.

Another trade rumor that has just surfaced involving the defending NBA champion Lakers is a trade with the New Jersey Nets bringing point guard Devin Harris to Los Angeles. It is uncertain who the Lakers would give up in return, but the Nets are definitely going to clear house before the NBA trade deadline and apparently the Lakers are interested in the young point guard.

Are the Lakers going after Chris Bosh?

January 18th, 2010

The defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers came into this NBA season with high hopes of repeating as NBA champs as they were able to keep their championship team for last season relatively intact with their only real loss being Trevor Ariza signing with the Houston Rockets.

Fortunately, the loss of Ariza hasn’t really been felt this season due to the signing of defensive specialist Ron Artest who has brought a much needed toughness to the Los Angeles Lakers this season in their title defense.

Even though the Lakers have the best record in the NBA at 30-9, they have struggled with some nagging injuries to three of their best players on the team with Pau Gasol’s hamstring, Ron Artest’s concussion and Kobe Bryant’s broken finger and back spasms.

Despite all their injury problems, the Los Angeles Lakers are still arguably the best team in the league right now as we near the mid season mark in the NBA.

With the best record in the NBA and a team that looks better than ever when healthy, you would figure they would be content with their squad, but apparently that isn’t the case as the Lakers could be shopping their most promising young player in center Andrew Bynum.

One position in the NBA that is the hardest to fill with a superstar caliber player these days is the center position as more and more players and teams seem to be leaning towards running their team through the guard position. Back in the day, when a team has a dominant center, that team is a perennial super power in the NBA.

The Boston Celtics had it back in the day with Bill Russell and have it now with Kevin Garnett in the paint. The Houston Rockets had it with Hakeem Olajuwon and the Dream Shake. The San Antonio Spurs have had it with the Twin Towers in Tim Duncan and David Robinson. The Los Angeles Lakers have had a dominant center multiple times from George Mikan to Kareem Abdul-Jabaar to Shaquille O’Neal to Andrew Bynum.

Needless to say, all these teams with dominant big men have all won one or more NBA titles.

It remains to be seen whether or not Andrew Bynum will be one of the dominant centers, but it would be hard to argue that he couldn’t end up being one of the best centers in the league.

Despite all that being said, the Lakers have been rumored to be talking with the Toronto Raptors about a trade that would bring forward Chris Bosh to Los Angeles in exchange for Andrew Bynum.

Blake Griffin and Michael Redd done for the season

January 18th, 2010

Injuries are part of the game in professional and collegiate sports and although basketball isn’t as much of a contact sport as say football or even soccer at times, there are still plenty of injuries throughout the NBA season that end up putting playing on the sidelines for the duration of the season.

This season there have already been three big names players to go down for the entire season, two of which in the last week and one recurring injury that has limited the progression of a promising young center in the Portland Trailblazers Greg Oden.

Last two seasons the Blazers have had somewhat of a draft bust in former number one overall pick in Greg Oden out of Ohio State as he missed his entire rookie with a knee injury and then came back last season which resulted in the same outcome of sitting on the bench with yet another season ending injury.

This season the trend continues with Oden as he has gone down for the third time and will most likely sit out the rest of the season.

Along with Oden, the Milwaukee Bucks sharp shooter Michael Redd and this season’s number one overall draft pick in Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin will both miss the rest of the season due to knee injuries of their own that will require surgery.

Just like Greg Oden, the Bucks Michael Redd also went down for the season last year with a knee injury and will almost certainly be finished as member of the Milwaukee Bucks as they have been talking about trading the shooting guard for the last two seasons.

The Los Angeles Clippers on the other hand have struggled to find a player through the draft that would be the final piece to the puzzle in their attempt to become a playoff team in the Western Conference once again. Coming into the draft the Clippers had the number one overall pick and had their sights set on the Oklahoma Sooners superstar forward in Blake Griffin and no one could argue with their decision.

Unfortunately, in the preseason, Griffin suffered a broken left kneecap that has kept him out of every regular season game so far. Most people believed he would rebound quick from the injury, but like Oden a couple of seasons ago, Griffin will miss his entire rookie season as his knee will require season ending surgery.

Sportsbook odds for Texas vs Alabama 2010 BCS Title Game

December 10th, 2009

mccoyThe BCS Championship Game will be played in about a month and the NCAA sportsbook experts, or odds makers, are taking that into account when they set the lines for the game. As good as the Tide looked against the Gators last week, if the title game was being played this week, we would anticipate at least a 7 point favor towards Alabama. But with a few extra weeks to prepare, the game is not as easy to predict as the teams normally look much more prepared. At this time, BetUs.com, one of the top USA online sportsbooks has Alabama as 5 point favorites over the Longhorns.  If your looking for a great credit card sportsbooks, check out Bodog as they are a leader in the industry and always welcome players from around the world.

FSU Seminole Spank #7 BYU

September 20th, 2009

As we predicted in yesterdays post, the Seminoles were able to step up their game and the D finally looked like they knew what they were doing. BYU did not play very well and the Noles did get some key turnovers, but with a 54 to 28 victory, The FSU Seminoles are showing that they have hte ability to step up and play like the critics think they can, but can they do it more than one week?

The Noles take on the South Florida Bulls this week and should be able to have another high scoring affair. With a climb to #18 in the AP Top 25, we will see what they can do to make it a little higher up the rankings.

#7 BYU at FSU today

September 19th, 2009

When the BYU Cougars upset the Oklahoma Sooners in Week 1, many thought that the matchup against Florida State was a pretty big deal and one that has a lot at stake. But with the Seminoles loss to Miami on Labor Day, BYU  faces an unranked FSU team.

190_fsuFlorida State followed up their loss to the Hurricanes with a dismal performance against Jacksonville State where the Noles did not get the job done until the final minute of the game – that was almost a 0-2 start. We watch Miami destroy Georgia Tech this Thursday and it looks like the Canes are for real. Thier QB is lighting up the scoreboard and their defense is incredibly fast. This will be an interesting year for the Canes, although they have some very tough games coming up – with Virginia Tech next week.

We think the Noles have something to prove this week and anticipate the defense finally stepping up their performance and actually covering some receivers this week. FSU needs to get the ball in the air, and not throw behind the line of scrimmage 50% of the time – use the famous slant of 10-12 yards that we use to use to tear up the competition.

What is going on with the NFL lately?

August 8th, 2009

Everyone is going around saying that the NFL has finally gone mad and this is with less than a week after starting their training camp. Eli Manning has apparently struck a $97.5 million contract or rather an extension with the Giants. The various idiosyncrasies of the N.F.L is baffling all the fans and the whole world in general it seems. Then there is the $90 pizza at the New Cowboys Stadium. Also Jerry Jones seems to have devised a new way to getting more and crowds to come for the games. Guess how? He is selling tickets to fans that are ready to watch the games by standing in the concourses. And then of course the Twitter controversy seems to have just blown over. From a USA online sportsbooks perspective, things seem a little crazy right now.

emanningHowever all the hype in NFL is currently surrounding the star quarterback Eli Manning. He has agreed to extend his contract with the New York Giants and this contract will give him the highest annual salary in the League currently. The negotiations have just gotten over. This extension is for six years and will make Eli Manning richer by $97.5 million. This contract includes $35 million as guaranteed money and will continue through the 2015 season. With the current contract, Eli Manning has about a single season left. His current contract is worth $45 million. This season he was supposed to be paid $9.4 million. Over the next seven consecutive seasons, Manning will be paid about $106.9 million. That basically makes his annual income somewhere around the astronomical figure of $15.27 million per year.

As per what New York Daily News says, the general manager of the new York Giants, Jerry Reese told journalists that the deal was almost complete with the exception of a few little details. According to the general manager, Eli Manning is really worth the contract and is a valuable player who is capable of performing consistently, even under intense media pressure. Before Eli Manning scored such a golden deal, it was the cornerback from Oakland Raiders, Nnamdi Asomugha had the highest income on an annual average. It was at $15.1 million per season. He had a three year deal which was worth $45.3 million dollars.

Eli Manning has a stellar NFL record with 14,623 yards with 98 touchdown passes and 74 interceptions. He threw for 3,238 yards in the last season with 21 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Manning was also the 14th rated passer in the NFL. Manning has an older brother called Peyton manning who is a quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts. Even he has a contract worth $14 per season. Eli Manning was selected for his first Pro Bowl in the last season and has lead the giants to the playoffs in all the four seasons that he has played as an NFL starter.
