Quarterback Trouble in Cleveland Quinn Benched Anderson to Start

The Cleveland Browns have been a troubled NFL franchise for quite some time now. It seems no matter what they do, no matter who they bring in to change things, they just can’t seem to become a winning football team.

A few seasons ago the Browns did look a little promising with an up and coming quarterback in Derek Anderson who was taking the NFL by storm and connecting with the Browns star receivers at the time in tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. and wide receiver Braylon Edwards. Everything seemed to be pointing in the right direction for the Browns, not quite a contender, but definitely a playoff caliber team with a lot of potential.

Well, that success was short lived with Anderson behind center as the next season turned out to be completely different as the Browns struggled all season long and had fallen off the map once again. Winslow still kept up his production, but was very critical of the team and eventually was traded to the Tampa Bay Bucs. Braylon Edwards on other hand went from prime time wide receiver, possibly one of the top five receivers in the league, to virtually non- existent as he dropped passes constantly and just couldn’t get back to elite receiver status.

This season the quarterback battle between Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson has been the main focus of the Cleveland Browns. Along with the quarterback competition the Browns brought in an old face in head coach Eric Mangini who was an assistant under Bill Belichick at Cleveland long ago. Mangini was pretty successful as the head coach of the New York Jets over the years, despite the team never really reaching its true potential.

Now that Mangini has come to Cleveland, arguably the best go to receiver Kellen Winslow Jr. has been sent to the Bucs and the quarterback debate has really heated up as Mangini kept the starter a secret until week one when Brady Quinn being the starter was leaked to the public.

As of a result of all the secrecy, the quarterback position and the very disappointing start to the season (0-3) by the Browns under Mangini has been the only thing people have been talking in Cleveland.

After Brady Quinn just put up horrible numbers in the first three weeks of the season, Mangini has decided to go with Derek Anderson as his starter for the time being.

Personally, I think this franchise needs a lot more changes then just the quarterback position, but this is a start in the right direction. The Browns will almost certainly go through some more rough times during the rest of the season, but there is always hope that they can turn it around with head coach like Eric Mangini running the show.
