Last week, local and federal authorities raided four of the Athens convenience stores in the country, which they suspected to have been a spot for illegal casino operations.
The US Internal Revenue Service Agents accompanied the Athens-Clark police to the spot and executed their search warrants at different stores. These stores were located on the east and the west side of the Clark County. Following the search, they were able to cart away couple of dozens of video machines. Other than that, police officials were also able to get their hands on a lot of business documents and cash.
Even though arrests were not made, police anticipated that both the storeowners and their employees are going to be indicted on the grounds of conspiracy and gambling, whenever the case gets presented to the grand jury of Clarke County.
One of the officials, who was a part of the investigation, said, “All of the four investigations have relation with the video gaming machines. They also had different undercover operations for cash payouts to the jackpot winners, which are in violation of the Georgia Law.”
Police believe that one of the reasons behind the illegal gambling to be running in full force across the country is due to the presence of independent providers of video gaming machines. They enter into deals with local businesses and give them the scope to do so.
