Members belonging to an online gambling panel agreed on the fact that there is need to take steps for protecting the players, who might engage in such activity, as it might get legal any time sooner.
According to Don Feeney, who is the official at the Minnesota Lottery, prohibition has not been able to take care of the situation. He was speaking in front of an audience, which included healthcare providers, clinicians as well as gambling experts at the Water’s Edge Report & Spa. It was the annual event hosted by the Connecticut Council on Problem Gambling.
Don said, “It has been long since that horse left the barn.” He said it in a reference to the ineffectiveness of the online gambling ban imposed by the federal government.
Chuck Bunnell, the chief of staff at Mohegan Sun’s owners, Mohegan Tribe, said, “There are close to 500 websites, where you have the scope to place a bet at this very moment. However, your wager might not be protected. Again, there may not be any verification on the age of the player.”
Bunnell believes that the position of the tribe in online gambling should get regulated by federal government. And the regulation should stay limited to poker only. He felt that in case of a per state approval, there may be a situation that there is an unsustainable patchwork amongst conflicting laws.
He said, “Most of us believe that if there is a federal solution, there result would be better. There is no doubt to the fact that there are people gambling online illegally for more than a decade. And we don’t think that if gambling becomes legal, it will have a major impact on the overall figure. However, in case there is legalization, we should be ready with strong yet simple laws, which work for the players.”
