In an unusual turn of events on Wednesday, a Las Vegas casino opted for refunding gamblers, who had lost money, when the Green Bay Packers lost to the Seattle Seahawks following a controversial touchdown. The game took place on Monday.
The owner of D Las Vegas, Derek Stevens, seized the attention, which was being paid to the poor officiating done during the Monday NFL game. His casino, then, became the only one in the city to offer refunds to its gamblers.
Speaking to the press, Stevens said, “I have a good idea of how it can feel, in case I laid the numbers and then saw what actually happened.” He declared that he was disgusted with the eventual ruling. He even said that he was not able to accept the result.
During the 14-12 win, Seahawks receiver and Packers defender were fighting for the ball on what was the last “Hail Marry” pass play. The official missed the offensive pass interference call. He said that both the players had simultaneously caught the ball. Under the rules of the NFL, this ruling allowed Seattle to have the touchdown and an eventual win.
However, not all the gambling regulators in Nevada were pleased with the move that Stevens made. There were a few, who said that they had no problems with Stevens making the refunds, but they would wish to stay away from it. However, some were worried that this move might let to a bad precedent.
Jay Kornegay, who is the director of sportsbook and race at LVH Casino, said, “So, if this sets a trend, then whenever there are poor decisions, will we be refunding the money? If we do, what should it be based on? We are supposed to make the payouts to the winning wagers. And this payment is precisely based on the league’s official final scores, which over here is NFL, irrespective of how the score came up.”
