On Tuesday, voters in Maryland gave approval to a new casino, after the state witnessed its most expensive political campaign ever.
There were close to 94 percent of the precincts, which reported for the campaign. Residents of Maryland favored the Question 7 by a vote percentage of 51.6 to 48.4. This measure will make way for placing the casino in the Prince George’s County.
The committee’s primary backer, MGM Resorts International, which supported the Question 7, spent more than USD 40 million on ballot question.
Penn National Gaming, which is the regional casino operator, opposed the Question 7. The company, whose headquarters are also in Las Vegas just like MGM, sprayed 42 million on the campaign promoting anti-gaming expansion.
On the whole, the overall figure for Question 7 crossed USD 90 million. This surpassed the total amount, which got used up during the previous 4 gubernatorial elections.
Jim Murren, who is the chairman of MGM Resorts, was very happy with this win and declared in a statement that the residents of Maryland have come out and delivered their message. The voters are looking to support progress by sorting through onslaught of lies.
Murren said that it was hard to expect the campaign would take such a vicious shape. However, common sense prevailed at the end, as they won the battle. If things work as they have been planned, people of the state will definitely benefit for their support to this cause.
