Residents of Toronto-Danforth do not wish to see a casino anywhere near Portlands, as it was told by Peter Tabuns, who is the local MPP, to the special council meeting that was held recently.
Representative of NDP were quite strong against the thought of having a casino in Portlands. According to them, this might lead to a significant rise in crime. There would be an undermining in local businesses and it might cause congestion as well.
Maheroon Mawji, who is a supporter of NDP and a resident of Victoria Village as well, was also present at the council for showing her opposition to a casino in Toronto.
The community council of Toronto and East York had organized the meeting for consulting with the people on the proposal of a casino in Toronto. They also wanted to hear the perspective of the staffs from the city with the possibilities of rezoning for allowing a casino to operate in their district.
There were over 30 speakers present in the meeting for sharing their views on the point and Tabuns was the first one to raise his voice against casino.
Tabuns said that he opposed the view due to a majority of reasons with one of them being the result of the survey, which he did amongst the quarter of the households in his area. And majority of those households didn’t have to make up their mind for rejecting the idea for a Portlands Casino.
Tabuns said, “The believed that such proposals might lead to an increase in addiction issues and henceforth lead to an increase in crime. Almost 70 percent of the people, who got surveyed, rejected the Portlands location to be chosen for a casino.”
